Honorable Mention
Fallen Star
Lisa Megraw

When l found you,
a fallen star
with a question mark for a heart
and a pain that scraped
nerve against nerve,
l sat beside your fire
watching the fat heat rise.

You told me of a place inside
that spoke poetry to the night,
deep chiselled on stone circles
the drumbeats hit only ears
made of the softest brush.

I called you Blue
because of the flowers,
the kiss of the rivers mouth,
but most of all because of the sky
and its crazy moth dance across the heavens.

You were taken from me years later.
Only then did l realise who you really were,
when l found the place of stones
where soft syllables fell off bloody
from the writing on flesh and bone.
We are both the words of love and loss
- how they fall from me now.
